22.02.2008: Considering the latest reports from the PROPATRIA multicentre trial in the Netherlands carried out on a group of patients with acute pancreatitis, we would like to invite everyone to look into the literature at the results of this study. The study protocol was published in BMC Surgery in 2004 and is available in the "Courses and publications" link. It is appropriate to cite the conclusion of the protocol abstract here: "The PROPATRIA study is aimed to show a reduction in infectious complications due to early enteral use of multispecies probiotics in severe acute pancreatitis". After initial findings of higher mortality in the probiotics patients' group, the authors recently published their results in Lancet - on February 14, 2008 (electronic publication ahead of print). The conculsion of the study is a contraindication to administer probiotics to patients with predicted severe acute pancreatitis. The link to the study abstract may also be found in the "Courses and publications" menu.

We have almost doubled the number of members, welcomed 4 supporting members (more details in the "Industrial Committe" link), published a very important title: "Probiotyki w zywnosci. Wlasciwosci zdrowotne i zywieniowe oraz wytyczne do ich oceny." and begun preparations for the second European Conference on Probiotics and their Applications - EUPROBIO 2008 (more information in the "Conferences and meetings" link or on the conference website www.euprobio.com). Prof. Hanna Szajewska, M.D., Ph.D. was elected to Chair the meeting. After voting upon the order of proceedings the issue of the first PSPP publication was raised and it was decided that the publication will be mailed to all the Society's members. Therafter, the discussion continued on the topic of EUPROBIO 2008 Conference that will be co-organized by the Society in November of next year (15-17) in Cracow. It was suggested to broaden the topics of EUPROBIO sessions with the following:

- Microbiota and obesity
- Microbiota and IBD
- Microbiota and allergy prevention and treatment
- Microbiota and functional gastrointestinal disorders
- Safety (including immunocompromised subjects)
- Strain selection for clinical trials
- Legislation
- FOR/AGAINST session

Most of the above were already included in the existing preliminary sessions programme (available through www.euprobio.com), others still need to be considered. Right after new member submissions were discussed, the following open motions were forwarded: (a) to consider organizing a social evening during EUPROBIO; (b) to consider publication of work presented during EUPROBIO 2008; (c) prebiotics – to be considered as an additional scientific session. With respect to all issues mentioned above, Prof. Szajewska concluded the Ist General Assembly of PSPP. The Society would like to thank its supporting member, VITIS Pharma Sp. z o.o., for all the food and refreshments that were served.

03.07.2007: Five PSPP representatives, including President Prof. Piotr B. Heczko, attended the ISAPP Open Forum in London, UK during the last week of June (26-28). The meeting took place in a genuinely unique venue - The Royal College of Physicians on 11 St Andrews Place facing Regent's Park - the oldest and most presigious English Medical Foundation incorporated by Royal Charter in 1518 A.D. The fifth home of the College, a modern but vividly decorated building with many museum-like paintings and pieces was perfectly suited for the ISAPP meeting and used the main session room, a large theatrical aula as well as a large presentation room for social and dining activities.

To summarize: Day 1 was ISAPP Board Meeting and Industrial Advisory Committee Meeting by invitation only; on Day 2 the main sessions were under the heading Prebiotics and Probiotics for Animals with speakers from all over the world and 4 sessions, poster viewing as well as a Rapid fire session where 6 Student Prize Winners presented their research. Among the Winners was Mr Tomasz Gosiewski from the Chair of Microbiology, Jagiellonian University Medical College in Cracow, a member of the Polish Society for Probiotics and Prebiotics, who prepared a presentation entitled: "Bifidobacteria numbers in colon of children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)" available in the Courses and Publications (please click to go to the page) link. At the end of Day 2 there was a free reception with snacks and wine and a performance by Mr Jimmy Bright - a British top comedian. Day 3 sessions were grouped under the main topic: Taking probiotics and prebiotics to Eastern Europe and the Developing World: what are the key issues? with a rapid fire session at the end of the day presenting hot data in various labs. The meeting was closed in the late afternoon on Thursday, June 28.

It was a truly interesting forum, presenting latest data in the field of pre- and probiotics and ISAPP made it possible for all participants to have it free of charge - participation, numerous coffee breaks, lunches and reception party with drinks were all free, thanks to the sponsors.
