The Polish Society for Probiotics and Prebiotics is the first scientific organization in Poland gathering experts on a national level,
who work in many different fields with strong interests in probiotics and prebiotics. The aim of the Society is to support scientific
and professional activities related to research and implementation of probiotics and prebiotics.
What are probiotics? Probiotics are live microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amount confer a health benefit on the host.
(World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Probiotics in food.
Health and nutritional properties and guidelines for evaluation. FAO Food and Nutrition Paper 85; Rome 2006.)
What are prebiotics? A prebiotic is a selectively fermented ingredient that results in specific changes in the composition and/or activity
of the gastrointestinal microbiota, thus conferring benefit(s) upon host health. (Gibson et al. 2010. Food Science and Technology Bulletin: Functional Foods 7 (1) 1–19.)
